We grow our crops ecologically. What is that supposed to mean?
It means that our goal is to create a healthy farm ecosystem in which animals, microbes and plants can thrive without becoming pests, diseases or weeds. We are using practices like cover cropping, composting and crop rotation to build soil quality which in turn leads to healthy plants that can better resist pressures from animals and pathogens.
We always follow the standards laid out by the National Organic Program, and do not use any substances on our farm besides those that are allowed under Organic standards. That said, we choose not to certify as organic through the USDA. Since the majority of our food goes to the families in our CSA and to the chefs with whom we work closely, we are able to form long-term relationships that can take the place of that certification. We strive to keep our members informed about the practices we use to grow their food through conversations and through our weekly email newsletter.
